The question is not whether a world without plastic pollution is possible, but what we will do together to create it.
That’s why have signed the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment. The commitment calls on companies and governments to eliminate the plastic we don’t need, to innovate so that all plastic we do need is 100% reusable, recyclable, or compostable, and to circulate all the plastic we use. Read the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment progress report 2019 to learn more about what we, and others around the world, are doing to make it a reality.
Among the key messages of the report are the following:
- This report provides an unprecedented level of transparency on how almost 200 businesses and governments are transitioning to a circular economy for plastics.
- Promising progress is being made as companies set out actions to eliminate problematic plastic packaging, and to increase the use of recycled plastic in packaging by more than five-fold by 2025.
- We must see a continued increase in the ambition level to eliminate problematic and unnecessary plastic packaging, innovate so that all plastic packaging is 100% reusable, recyclable, or compostable, and circulate all the plastics we use so they don’t become waste or pollution.
- Ellen MacArthur Foundation and UN Environment Programme call for more businesses and governments to sign the Global Commitment and work towards achieving a circular economy for plastics.
