The 1st action of the year completed on 19 January 2019, inside the green pine forest located in Marathon, Attiki which leads to the main beach of Marathon Bay. In total 2 hours, we collected 16 bags of which 10 had plastic bottles and plastic packages, mainly single-use plastics, and the other 6 bags had beer, refreshments, cardboards and whatever else the bathers left (unfortunately) while leaving the beach. The good thing was that the beach was very clean and all these litter were picked up in the road leading to the beach.
However, we have to understand that the solution to plastic pollution is not only the beach clean-ups and all the actions that clean the trash from the oceans. We have to prevent plastic beforing ending up to the oceans. We have to use less plastic, we have to refuse the majority of plastic items from our everyday life, we have to change our habits, we have to be more conscious on the items we put to trash and plus, we have to recycle. According to the latest statistics of the year, 90.5 per cent of plastic waste in the world has never been recycled.
We are planning our next action, so please stay tuned.
